Tompkins Country Services Department and The Community Coalition for Healthy Youth
The Community Coalition for Healthy Youth received a government grant to engage community parents, youth and community partners in reducing the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and violence among youth in Ithaca and Tompkins County. With the help of Tompkins County Services Department, the two research partners needed a flexible, real-time survey solution with robust reporting capabilities.

Paper surveys created a significant delay in obtaining results—students took surveys in March and results posted in November.
Needed ability to query the data and get targeted insight into specific segments while also reporting specific key indicators to the government.
With many involved parties, the growing list of survey questions created the need for survey design flexibility and complex question branching.
Needed the ability to build in questions to help establish valid responses, ensuring the overall dataset was accurate.
DatStat Illume offers real-time access to data sets as surveys are being submitted.
Collecting demographic information combined with DatStat’s advanced query capabilities, including cross-tabulation offered deeper insight into the data.
With DatStat Illume, conditional logic created a relevant conversational survey experience for students—only presenting relevant questions based on previous real-time answers.
Through flexible survey design and the assistance of the DatStat Client Services, we were able to identify and flag invalid responses.
Removing paper surveys reduced time to results from 6 months to 1 day—enabling the coalition and school principals to quickly access data, which increased the ability to impact the current year’s programs.
With aggregated data, the coalition was able to report key indicators to the government. In addition, with relevant data about specific segments, the coalition was able to present data to schools enabling schools to target programs based on a specific group’s perception.
With shared computers and limited time, students were able to take the surveys more quickly and the relevant questions helped ensure more accurate responses.
Identifying and removing 71 invalid responses, increased data integrity and gave them confidence in their results.
